This exhibit has multiple layers, some of which will only be understood by those invested in the live production industry. From a collection of survey responses from industry professionals and students, I have pieced together stand out reasons, quotes and key words as to why theatre is important within our society. Each moment within the content displayed, is a representation of my reaction to these reasons, all visually centred around a central orb, which has a different meaning depending on your perspective. Whilst engaging with this content, you also see your own reflection within the surface, allowing you to see yourself as part of this piece, because you are! Your contribution to this industry is part of the reason it is so important. YOU are part of the building blocks that make this industry what it is.

This visual journey begins with an abstract representation of how theatre brings happiness, joy and an increased confidence, through content made from photos of my own art. We then shift to exploring how theatre allows for cultural development and storytelling. This then moves on to represent creativity and expression. Many people identified that theatre allows them to experiment artistically with no boundaries on shape, colour or movement, and the abstract content displayed represents this freedom. The piece then shifts to exploring the stress and adrenaline that is present when preparing a show for an audience. This is presented through the fast striking of red, which then shifts to a yellow orb, representing the happiness of audience members when they see the final product. The piece then shows a more literal point of view, as we see layered timelapses of productions I have worked on. This represents collaboration and community, as many people identified that working with like-minded people and being a part of the theatre community is what makes this so important. The finally of this piece represents the main reason why I think theatre is so important. You see a tracing of a profile silhouette, followed by a colourful explosion that fills the entire surface, except the silhouette shape in which you would be standing – “Theatre lets us explore what it means to be human”.

Below you will see two versions of this exhibit, a version filmed in the space with me in the reflection, and a digital overlayed version.
